The exam is a six-hour exam containing both stand-along, multiple-choice questions, and case-based constructed-response questions. Detailed test specifications are published by FP Canada in the FP Canada Blueprint: CFP Examination and each question relates to the specific content outlined in the FP Canada Standards Council Competency Profile.
The stand-alone multiple choice questions cover 20-30% of the exam, while the constructed-response questions cover 70-80%. Each question covers at least one or multiple financial planning areas.
The CFP exam is administered twice per year. In 2022, FP Canada will start holding 3 separate exam dates to give student more options.
